The Institute of Financial Planning is the professional body for those committed to the development of the multi-disciplinary profession of financial planning.

Its mission is to develop and promote the profession of financial planning to the general public and to those people involved in providing advice and guidance to their clients in order to fulfil most effectively every client's financial and lifestyle objectives.

The institute was founded in 1986. In 1995 it earned the right to award the CFP® and Certified Financial PlannerCM licence designations in the UK, by exclusive licence from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. in the United States.

Membership designations and qualifications

The Institute offers a range of qualifications and designations, but all members sign the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice.

  • Certified Financial PlannerCM licence - this internationally recognised qualification is currently held and used by over 126,000 people worldwide. For further details see the Certified Financial PlannerCM standard.
  • Fellowship (FIFP) - requires the holder to have passed the Institute's own rigorous Fellowship Examinations and have five years' relevant experience.
  • Associateship (AIFP) - requires the holder to have professional level qualifications such as the AFPC, ACII, FLIA (dip) etc. with three years' relevant experience.
